About Me

Who Am I?

Hi I'm Tanya Shah I am an urban planner from India, currently residing in Los Angeles pursuing my Master of Planning degree at University of Southern California, with a concentration in sustainable land use along with dual Graduate Certificates in Sustainable Policy and Planning and International Policy and Planning. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning from CEPT University, Ahmedabad, India.

I am really passionate about using sustainable methods and solutions for solving everyday issues. Before coming to USC, I was working with a NGO in India focused on educating women living in slums about climate change and showing them easy ways to mitigate its consequences. Currently, I am working at SCAG in the Sustainability Department working on the upcoming 2020 Regional Plan. I hope to continue working at a nexus of environmental and transportation planning, education along with community empowerment.

Map Making

I can create a variety of maps using softwares such as ArcGIS and work at different spatial scales.

Graphic Design

I have been working with the Adobe Suite for 3 years now, and can create infographics, maps, site layouts.

Reports

As a planner, I am accustomed to presenting and writing reports on my sites and projects.

Data Analysis

A lot of the work I have done, has been data organization and analysis. I have worked with huge data-sets such as InfoUSA and BOE data for the Southern California region.

Site Planning

Having been in the field of urban planning for more than 5 years has given me the chance to work and collaborate on a lot of site planning projects across different scales.

On-Site Surveys

I have designed at least 10 questionnaires and completed more than 200 on-site surveys alongwith necessary field work over my journey as an urban planner.

Sustainability Intern at Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) April, 2018 to Present

The Southern California Association of Governments is the Metropolitan Planning Organization of six of the ten counties in Southern California, serving Imperial County, Los Angeles County, Orange County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, and Ventura County. It is the largest MPO in the United States serving 191 cities.

• Create visualization samples for potential maps and data contents for the RTP-SCS.

• To help in organizing and note-keeping during the RTP-SCS working group meetings.

• Analyze sales for retail and number of retail outlets data over 2011 and 2015 for the entire SCAG region.

Intern at Public Matters, LLC October, 2017 to April, 2018

Greetings from East LA is an urban planning, design, art and journalism project with students at the East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy (ELARA) at Esteban Torres High School facilitated by Public Matters, LLC. The project explores, documents and interprets the values that the high school students assign to people and places in East LA, while responding to representation and equity.

• Shadow Public Matters in the classroom to understand and learn community-engaged processes.

• Research, document, and create classroom materials on active transportation planning to highlight the importance of it and translate complex transportation planning terminologies for simpler understanding.

• Create maps of East LA for the students to create a base for students to envision the various Prototypes of Multimodal and Active Transportation Tours of East L.A.

Boot Camp Coordinator at Sol Price School of Public Policy, USC June, 2018 to May, 2019

• Curated and organized 15 boot camps over the course of the academic year.

• Work with boot camp instructors to develop learning objectives.

Research Assistant for Archiprix '17 held at CEPT University August, 2016 to February, 2017

Archiprix International is an initiative of the Archiprix foundation, a cooperation of the Dutch schools for higher education in the fields of architecture, urban design and/or landscape architecture. Archiprix International invites biennially all schools worldwide in Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture to select their best graduation project and honors them. The 2017 Archiprix was held at CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

• Researched possible methods to showcase the information of the city that is appealing as well as informative to the visitors.

• Envision a document that can be replicable, to become a souvenir representing the city.

Intern at Mahila Housing Trust (MHT) April, 2016 to May, 2017

Mahila Housing SEWA Trust (MHT) is an autonomous organization promoted by the NGO Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) in 1994 with the vision to realize the right to shelter and dignity for all.

• Attended the 2-day training workshop focused on qualitative and quantitative survey methods and data analysis tool, facilitated by Professor Michael Elliott, Associate Director of Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development.

• Visited 15 slums located across the city where I took a quantitative 30 minutes survey with about 80 women living there and held a qualitative hour-long interview with 20 of them.

• Assist in translating complex planning terminologies and the concept of climate change to uneducated slum women.

Intern at Center for Excellence in Urban Transport (CoE-UT) May, 2016 to July, 2016

CoE-UT is a transportation-based research center of CEPT University. It is an initiative of the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India and is supported by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

As part of the research team in this project, I analyzed and compiled the indicators that were under each focus area (over 50 indicators). I compared the results of this study (2015 dataset) with the results from the 2012 study and documented the unexpected results. The outcome of the internship was a report, which further was approved by MoUD. This experience helped me in getting a glimpse of the issues that exist in the sector of urban transport in the country. I also had the opportunity to study successful urban transport case studies of different cities worldwide which provided me with a better understanding about sustainable transportation practices all around.

Intern & Volunteer at Center for Environmental Education (CEE) April, 2015 to December, 2015

Centre for Environmental Education (CEE) which is a Centre of Excellence supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. CEE's work in Gujarat initiated way before 1984 since its headquarters is located at Ahmedabad.

• Researched about the existing administrative and legislative mechanisms that are in place to protect the environment and natural resources, particularly in India.

• Reached out to potential speakers at the conference and looked at their works.

• Participated in the Eleventh Conference of Youth (COY 11), Indian chapter which gave me a perspective about the current youth ideologies and the issues with Indian education system.
